Now, I have been working as a professional photographer for over three years. I started my photography career in Los Angeles, California and just moved it to Missouri City, TX. Before I started in Los Angeles, I consider myself to have been an amateur photographer. I was strictly doing it as a hobby. I have some great photos from my amateur days. I wasn’t earning an income, but I was learning how to use my camera. I started taking photos of my kids and then my friends kids. Then, I started having other people that I didn’t even know ask me to take their photos. During those days, I used a Canon Rebel T6i crop sensor camera. It was the perfect camera for what I thought I wanted—photos of my kids. I bought several lenses and used them each for various scenarios. I started taking photography classes to learn everything I could about my camera and photography. I gained a new respect for photographers. There is so much to learn in this field. I didn’t just want to take photos and hope for the best though. I wanted to learn how to get the best shots. I wanted to know my camera and why I needed specific settings. I wanted to understand how light affected my settings and my images. So, I decided to go Manual. I learned words that I had never heard before—aperture and iso. I learned to see how those two, along with shutter speed gave me the images I wanted. I made a lot of mistakes. I remember one day getting only dark images, not quite understanding that you can’t have a high aperture with a fast shutter speed. I’ll never forget my first shoot, thinking I had the confidence to go Manual Mode. After the first few shots, I panicked. I wasn’t getting the images I wanted. And, I was I constantly looking at my lcd screen. My images were either dark or blurry! I quickly went back to TV (time value) mode. I set the shutter speed and let my camera adjust for the lighting. And, for an amateur, that’s fine. But, I didn’t want to be an amateur. I started thinking about photography as a career. I loved the challenge it gave me. I loved meeting new people. And, I loved editing. It really inspired me to do more and want more. I soon expressed interest to another photographer about learning and she allowed me to help her! She was a newborn photographer. I would bring my camera to the session and try it out in her studio. This was when I started to discover the limitations with my camera and my lenses. To take photos of babies, you need to be pretty close. A lens with a long focal point and a camera with a crop sensor weren’t going to cut it. I wasn’t ready to invest in professional equipment just yet. I stuck it out with my 50 mm lens and my crop sensor. By sticking with it, I was able to learn so much. I honestly was so appreciative of having a professional take the time to teach me, that I never dreamt of starting a business in her area. And, then my husband got a job in another state, California. The timing was perfect. It was time to start my business. I decided that if I was going to become a professional photographer, I needed to invest in a professional camera and professional lenses. I loved my Canon Rebel T6i and wanted to stick with Canon. So, I upgraded to the Mark IV full frame camera and two professional lenses. My go to lens for portraits is the 85 mm 1.4 prime lens. And, for wide angles such as landscapes, groups. or close-ups, I use a 16-35mm zoom lens. I absolutely love the quality of my camera and my lenses. There isn’t a shot I can’t get.
